OpenOffice is a Microsoft Office replacement written by Sun Microsystems and the open source community. OpenOffice does everything that MS Office does, in a better written package. It can save directly to PDF files. It does not cost $500+ per user.

You can continue to use Microsoft Office, or OpenOffice, or both. The documents that they create, and most of the features, are the same. The interface is slightly different, but spending a few minutes with the materials on this page will get you right up to speed.

Book: Switching to OpenOffice from Microsoft Office

There's a book by one of my favourite authors that answers all the "how do I...?" questions that come up when moving from Microsoft Office to OpenOffice.org

We have 2 versions on our Intranet in Adobe PDF files:
- the full book (332 pages) (8 mb)
- the most relevant chapters (119 pages) (3.5 mb)

We also have the paper copy of the book. Ask Geoff or Daniel if you would like to borrow this.

Clue Sheets

For quick reference, we have OpenOffice.org Clue Sheets (10 pages). Two pages cover OpenOffice Writer; two pages cover the spreadsheet program; two pages cover Impress (the PowerPoint clone); two pages cover the drawing program; and two pages cover general issues.

How to print envelopes:

OpenOffice Writer inserts the envelope as the first page of your letter--which makes it easy to see and edit. Click on Insert > Envelope...

Under the Envelope tab, you put in the name (sometimes OpenOffice Writer can figure this out from your letter), and your return address (if you are using a plain envelope.) Under the Printer tab, select the 5th icon, and put "Shift Right by 6 cm"

The envelope is now your page 1. The printer will prompt you to put in an envelope once you've printed it.

How to set up OpenOffice.org

The newest version of Microsoft Office (Office XP) costs about $600 per user to "upgrade" to it. While Microsoft Office is the standard in business, many of us are frustrated with Microsoft's idea of how to build software. I find it hard to justify spending a large amount of money on software that is often poorly designed.

There are several alternative packages available, including an 'open source' (i.e. free!) version from www.openoffice.org. This is a collaborative effort by about 10,000 programmers, many from Sun and Boeing, to build a bug-free package that is compatible with Microsoft Office files. I've been using the pre-release version for a couple of months, and like it much better than any version of MS Office I've ever tried. The final version has just been released.

The package includes Writer (replaces Word), Calc (replaces Excel), Impress (replaces PowerPoint), and Draw (no equivalent).

Once installed, here are some customizations to make it work the way you want:

Please contact Geoff or Daniel if you would like this installed on your computer.
