Frontier - History & Vision

A Brief History
Frontier Equipment Ltd. was founded in 1984 by Larrie York, the late Terry Sumner and Geoff Bannoff. At that point, we catered to the explorational (core) drilling industry, primarily building Mudmaster Pump units.

The primary markets for our products have always been the resource industries. Resource industries go in cycles, which are based on price, supply, regional and international demand, government regulations and environmental factors. We have seen very tough times (the first few years, then again in 1991-92), and boom times in our various markets.

In 1996 we opened our Edmonton branch. In September 2000 we opened our Calgary branch. At the request of John Deere, these stores were named Frontier Power Products.

May 27, 2004 we legally changed our company name to Frontier Power Products Ltd. to better reflect our product focus.

In April 2009 we opened our Winnipeg branch.

We have taken on new markets, new product lines, and new people. At every step there have been new challenges, new problems, and new solutions. As we collectively and individually rise to these challenges, our expertise has grown. Frontier has matured into a well-respected power products supplier.

The Future
The future is bringing further challenges. The diesel engine market is stagnant in Canada, so growth will come from serving existing and potential customers better than our competitors. Each individual has a place in our corporate evolution; each person makes a difference.

Attentive customer service, quality workmanship, mindfulness of the details, prompt and professional behaviour with our customers and each other... there are many ways that we affect our customers, our working environment, and ultimately Frontier's future.

Vision
What makes a company a good place to work? What makes it satisfying?

A company is a group of individuals with a diverse set of viewpoints. There are however, shared values that allow the group to work together. Frontier does not have a formal "vision statement", but our direction seems to be based on these principles:

  • Treat customers, vendors and co-workers fairly, honestly, and with respect.
  • Excellent quality and workmanship, with attention to details.
  • Create and maintain a profitable, financially healthy company.
  • Create a healthy, uplifted work environment, where each individual takes pride in their work, and improves their skills, knowledge and abilities.

Are we there yet? Like life, Frontier is a work-in-progress. It is up to each of us to help shape the present and create our future.
