Wikis - collaborative documents that you can edit. These are good for bodies of knowledge that evolve. A global example is Wikipedia. Locally, we are using this to keep track of Deere RemanSelect engine changes, Tier 4 emissions info, and various computer programs.
You can contribute to any wiki. You can start a new wiki. It's a reasonably intuitive process, but you can ask Daniel or Geoff for help.
Blogs - short for web log. These are day to day news peces where you can let other folk know what you are working on. You can write these; you can read and see what others are doing. At this point, only Geoff has a blog with computer-related stuff. However, anyone can create a blog. Let others know what interesting projects you are working on.

A few months ago, an old friend had a bicycle accident, knocked his head, and would have died on the spot if one of his neighbours hadn't revived him with CPR. This event convinced me to finally sign up for a CPR course.
A half day course cost $57. Learning CPR was straightforward and easy. We also learned how to rescue choking adults, children and infants. (Two years ago a close relative had her life saved because someone at the next restaurant table knew the "J-Thrust" formerly known as the Heimlich Maneuvre.) We also practiced using an AED (automated external defibrillator)--again, very simple and straightforward.
These skills are so useful, and the instruction is so easy to get--why did I procrastinate for decades before taking this course?
So I'd like to encourage you to take this course. For free. Take a CPR course, bring in the receipt, and Frontier will reimburse you.

An email arrived asking us to ship a $20,000 Kubota SQ generator set to Dubai. The buyer said he would send a bank transfer, and we could ship the set after the transfer arrived.
Randy thought that something didn't feel right about the deal. The email address was a ..@mail.com address, there was no phone number, and something about the wording was a little off. Randy thought it sounded like a scam.
We checked with our banker. Bank transfers cannot bounce. He advised us to go ahead with the deal.
But it's good that we called the banker so he knew to watch out for anything unusual.
The buyer called to ask if we had received our bank transfer yet. We checked with the bank, and it had not yet arrived. Then the buyer called to say that a mistake had been made, and $62,000 got transferred instead of $20,000. When we got it in our account, would we please send him the $42,000 change.
Later that day, our banker called. There was a bank draft on his desk for $62,000, drawn on an American bank.
This is the crucial point. A bank transfer cannot bounce; a bank draft is just a piece of paper. It could be a forgery, drawn on a fake bank, stolen, or could be legitimate. If we hadn't alerted our banker, the money would probably have been deposited to our account; we would have assumed it to be a bank transfer (because that's what the customer told us it would be), so could have fallen for the con job. Then when the bank draft bounced in a couple of weeks (international bank transfers can take awhile to be fully processed), we would have been out a lot of money.
This is how crooks operate. Create confusion (bank transfer? bank draft? what was the amount?), create a sense of urgency (we need the overpayment right away, so please hurry to send it back), and in the midst of the chaos they create, they get what they want. Sometimes.
If something feels funny, it probably is. Get Larrie, Randy, Bill and Geoff involved. We are getting rather experienced in spotting scams.

landline, cellphone or fax number you want to be listed. One twist is the
"Confirmation Code" you need to type in after looking at the image is
case-sensitive.
Stop unaddressed junk mail by attaching a sticker or

John Deere can debit our account for an emission label change for a new
engine used as a warranty replacement, sometimes months after the claim was
completed. This was recently discovered for 2 warranty claims involving
DTAC:
- 1. Commercial Trenching (Edm) on workorder 23724 (DTAC 9868173)
March 2007 - Even though DTAC RGA'd this engine core back in March '07, we were
billed a core deposit for an emission label change for $1800 yesterday.

2. CdnDewatering (Surrey) on workorder 23118 (DTAC 9851095) March 2007 - DTAC
claimed they did not want engine core back but still had a label change done
and we were billed $3300 yesterday. We must now return this core to receive
credit.
Because of this, I will now need to be notified whenever a Replacement Engine from inventory is being used as a warranty replacement, or if a code change (emission label) is being done to debit us for a Replacement Label core deposit. This is so I can track and follow up on our deserved core deposit credits.
Your notes made in the engine file of these code change requests and dates are very helpful and provide good backup documentation. It is also important to know that even though DTAC may tell you they do not require the old engine back, DO NOT assume it's all done with; not any more!... Keep the core and tag it clearly with the DTAC case number and our invoice or workorder number. Months later Deere may catch up and debit us a Replacement Emission Label core deposit. The only way to get this deposit back is to return the engine core to ReGen.
Keep in mind a label change means we get billed and are responsible to return the core back to receive credit. This can amount to thousands$$ (eg. 6125 core is US$5500)

Once a month, take a few minutes to clean up your old mail in Outlook Express.
First, clean out old 'Sent items.' Select everything over 4 months old, and delete it. (In true Microsoft fashion, this doesn't delete anything--it just moves it to the 'Deleted items' folder.)
Second, delete all the old emails in your Inbox. No point in keeping anything more than 6 months old.
Third, clean out old 'Deleted items'. Select everything over 4 months old and delete it. Outlook Express asks if you really want to delete it. Say "yes"
Finally, click File > Folders > Compact all folders.
Keeping old mail isn't a good idea. Outlook Express keeps your entire inbox in a single file. As this file grows, it's more likely to get corrupted the larger it gets. All your mail and documents get backed up to the server every time you log off and log on. As your files get bigger, your logon and logoff waits get longer. We have found that large mail files (> 1 GB, or about 1,500 messages) cause server problems, too. So the monthly pruning of your email helps Frontier, and helps you.

One of the ways that cellphone companies make money is by charging for services that you thought were free. Here is some fine print from Bell Mobility's contract:
"Data transport charges (currently $0.05/kb) will apply when you use any feature or service using data transport. For example, current average Kilobyte usage to check your horoscope = 10 kb (50 cents), download a ringtone = up to 145 kb ($7.25) plus the cost of the ringtone (currently up to $4.00) or download a full track song = 1000 kb ($50.00) plus the cost of the song (e.g. $3.00)."

We have found Intelligent Batteries in Richmond BC offers good quality replacement batteries at about half the price of Dell Computers. Another gentle reminder… we need to pay attention to the Canadian emissions laws.
A good "rule of thumb"
- if the engine has a flex label (e.g. Deere)
it can’t be used for re-power unless it’s a stationary application.
This must really be stationary--not "it doesn’t move very often"--but
stationary. If you are unsure, ask.
If we are selling an engine with a flex label for a stationary application the customer must state that on their purchase order. If they don't use purchase orders we will require it in writing before we ship.
Our flex exemption for variable speed engines is for power units, for gensets it is complete gensets... not partials. We are the manufacturer.
If an engine does not have an emissions label it may have been manufactured before a tier became law for that size, so it is "grandfathered" and exempt.
We don’t guess. The fines are bankrupting. We feel strongly if the Canadian government does an audit, we will be chosen. We are one of the largest importers of off-road industrial diesel engines in Canada. Cat, Cummins et al are not using flex, we are. We can't abuse it. Competitors are saying we are selling illegal engines (we are not), let's not give them any reason to report that we are.

Version 2 of OpenOffice does everything that Microsoft Office does, better, and cheaper.
OpenOffice has a writer (replaces Microsoft Word), spreadsheet (replaces Excel), presentation manager (replaces PowerPoint) and several other useful programs. You can have both Microsoft Office and OpenOffice on your computer at the same time. However, each copy of Microsoft Office costs us $450 in licensing costs, so we prefer not to use it.
If you have a file that does not appear to be compatible with OpenOffice, send it to Geoff. I will figure out the problem and either make it compatible, or re-install Microsoft Office on your computer. To date I have not found any files that cannot be made compatible.
New training resources include tutorials for those with no computer experience, and first-time users of OpenOffice.

The likelihood of a flu pandemic is increasing. If you start developing healthy habits now, if and when a pandemic arrives, you will be more likely to stay healthy. A habit is something done without having to think--you have done it so many times, it is automatic.
The single most effective way of preventing the transmission of disease is with proper handwashing. Sounds like something you learned as a child, right? Well, how did you get your last case of a cold or the flu? Handwashing probably could have prevented it.

With so many employees on Windows Messenger, it can get annoying to get audio prompts every time someone signs in. It is difficult to turn this 'feature' off, but we have found a way to do it.
Windows Messenger > Tools > Options > Preferences > Alerts
> Sounds > Sounds
Scroll down to Windows Messenger / Contract

If you change the "Sounds" to "none", it would make sense that the sound would go away, right? Not so. Instead it plays the "Windows Default Beep" sound.
I've created a small sound file that is on your computer called c:\winutils\silence.wav
Change the sound to this file, and one less
minor annoyance in your day.

We have a new form for customers to sign when they drop off goods for repair. This informs the customer that they are responsible for insuring the equipment while the goods are in our shop.

We had another attempted theft on the company. This one was a little bit interesting as it developed over a couple of months. We were contacted via email on one of our "hot deals" on our web site. There were several messages back and forth with us essentially saying we need the money in the bank before we could ship. Eventually we did received a cheque for $55,000 drawn on a well established forestry company out of Ontario. Now the "customer" is saying that his deal has changed and he wants us to wire the money back to him.
The cheque of course was fraudulently obtained. The scam artists were counting on it taking several weeks for the company whom the cheque was drawn on to notice and "stop payment" on it. Meanwhile we would think that the cheque cleared and it would be OK to return the funds.
Luckily this whole transaction seemed strange right from the beginning. When we received the cheque we contacted the forestry company to make sure it was legitimate and of course found out it was not.
Although we do not get these every day these attempts are not uncommon. If something seems strange it probably is and we must check it out thoroughly. Credit card scams are one area where we can be quite vulnerable. Unless we have the card and physically "swipe" the transaction can be rejected months later. Be wary of unsolicited telephone sales using credit cards. Know who your customer is.

We just had an attempted $40,000 credit card fraud. A customer in Nigeria ordered a bunch of parts, and asked them to be billed to 4 separate credit cards.
If we do not have an imprint of the card and the customer's signature, we have no protection against fraud. The authorization doesn't guarantee us the money if we don't have these. This applies to all telephone or mail orders! If we had shipped this order, Frontier would have lost $40,000.
Please read the updated Visa/Mastercard procedures:
The key is to use your own intelligence. If something seems fishy, it probably is! Instead of calling for an automated authorization, select the option for the "code 10" authorization. "Code 10" means "suspicious activity".
When I called today, the Visa rep gave me the number for Bank of America, but it didn't work (Bank of America 1-800 numbers do not work in Canada). We called back and made them find us a number that would work. This is their job--so make them do it right.
We talked to Bank of America, discovered that yes, the transaction was fraudulent. Because we called in, all the cards are now cancelled.
If something suspicious crosses your desk, it's probably a good idea to get Bill or me involved.

I was talking to Len at the Cat store and learned about a recent scam. Since December rental houses and genset suppliers have had guys calling in the middle of the night, on weekends, or during the day ordering generators. They claim to work for PreDrill or large oil companies. They issue a PO# and tell you to it deliver a location and just drop the unit off.
They have got away with a few units. When asked for a copy of the PO you never hear from them again and when the oil company gets the invoice it's not their PO, or the person who ordered don't work for them.
So ask a lot of questions, and get copy of PO if the person ordering is not familiar.
